Automatic traffic barriers are helping to stop nuisance parking at a hospital in Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis.
Bad parking at the Western Isles Hospital has prompted the local NHS authority to introduce a range of improvement measures, and is also considering issuing parking tickets and penalties for those who flout the rules.
According to the Stornoway Gazette, the authority has introduced parking barriers, which can only be accessed by a token, to create a specific space for patients.
In addition, the car park has been significantly extended, with 80 more spaces added, costing £400,000.
Gordon Jamieson, chief executive of NHS Western Isles, said that there was now "no excuse" for bad parking at the site given the new measures."Hospitals are plagued by people showing no regard for spaces," he said.
In addition Mr Jamieson said in a report that more parking barriers and signage would be introduced.
"Also waiting is the installation of signage, which is currently on order, and additional safety barriers for the parking at the bottom of the Accident and Emergency steps and also to the new raised island forming the drop-off area at the front door."
The NHS authority has three hospitals in the area, in Stornoway, Benbecula and Castlebay.
