Residents on a road in Wigan are calling for traffic barriers to be installed after likening the street to "Brands Hatch", it has been reported.

Last Friday the Ashton family saw two cars veer off Warrington Road at Marus Bridge, smash through a bus stop and plunge down a verge before they crashed into two parked cars owned by the family, Wigan Today said.

The Ashtons, who estimate the damage to their cars at around £50,000, are asking for crash barriers to help protect pedestrians and vehicles in the area.

Les Ashton told the news source crash barriers were planned some time ago but failed to materialise, and since then conditions on the street had gone from bad to worse, with the area now like "Brands Hatch".

His daughter Sandra said safety was of paramount importance.

She told the news provider: "We are on about safety at the end of the day and people looking out for each other.

"The potential ramifications of this happening again are unbelievable when you think about it. All we are asking for is a crash barrier – it could save someone’s life."

Earlier this week a street in north Wales called for security bollards after dangerous driving was causing safety concerns.
