Hartlepool Council has been urged to step up security at a cemetery by installing security fencing and CCTV.

Thousands of residents have signed a petition calling for the extra precautions after items from the graveside of a youngster who died were stolen, the Hartlepool Mail reports.

Security fencing is needed to provide access control, while CCTV would be able to monitor any more incidents.

The child's aunt and grandmother have so far secured 2,265 signatures. They told the newspaper: "We are really passionate about getting increased security at the site and to collect more than 2,000 signatures is great.

"We still have around 40 forms to be handed in and the response from people has been unbelievable."

The council said it will consider the petition once it is in receipt of it.

Last month the Cambs Times reported that security fencing and metal gates had been installed at a Wisbech cemetery after vandalism.
