A community group has erected play area fencing around a children's park area in a bid to prevent dog fouling.

Friends of Overtoun Park secured a grant of around £9,000 to install security fencing at the site, the Rutherglen Reformer said.

The committee's first priority, after discussions with local users, was to clamp down on dog fouling in Overtoun Park's play area, after concern that children were being exposed to it.

Parents had identified dog fouling as a particular problem. Elaine Devlin, chair of the Friends, told the newspaper that during consultations it became clear that "there were a lot of complaints about dog fouling in the children’s play area and dogs running into children".

But now that play area fencing has been installed, it is hoped children will no longer be in danger.

"We’re delighted with the fence. It’s well finished and looks great and everyone I’ve spoken to is delighted with it.

"The added benefit is that it keeps the kids safe as well and stops them from wandering off," she said.

Earlier this month security fencing was installed at a Salisbury school after several incidents of vandalism.
