The problems resulting from using outmoded security fencing have been highlighted this week after a major supermarket chain was urged to repair a gap in its security fencing.
A Green Party councillor has said residents told him trolleys are being dumped around Reading after being taken from the town's Tesco supermarket, reports getreading.co.uk.
Rob White has asked the supermarket giant several times to restore the missing security fencing but to no avail.
Customers can take trolleys through the gap because the store's electronic security system can be evaded by passing through it.
Mr White told the news provider the risks of abandoned trolleys was serious.
"One of the issues that I pick up on the doorstep and as I walk around Newtown is dumped trolleys.
"These cause problems blocking roads and pavements and if they are not collected they eventually turn up in the river, becoming a mini dam and worsening flooding."
Apparently the security fencing has been missing for months.
However, a spokesperson for Tesco said that temporary fencing solutions had been employed at the site, with permanent security fencing set to follow.
