Restored metal railings will form part of a major £2 million revamp of Falkirk town centre.

According to stv.tv, Falkirk's Old and St Modan's Parish Churchyard will have its historic metal railings revamped, alongside stone conservation and carving.

And the tomb of Sir John de Graeme, who stood alongside William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, will also be restored.

Falkirk Council said the improvement works would improve safety in the area, and make it more accessible to visitors. New street lighting and furniture will also be installed.

Adrian Mahoney, council development convenor, told the news provider: "This is the first large grant award we have received since the Falkirk Council area became a 'priority' area for Heritage Lottery funding.

"It's a great boost to an exciting and dynamic project which will give a vital new focus to the town centre and offer a unique conservation experience."

Earlier this month metal railings were credited with improving Formby town centre in Merseyside.
