A stretch of land in Lancashire that has become a haven for fly-tippers will be blocked-off by security bollards.

According to gazettelive.co.uk, Rossendale council requested the traffic barriers at the bottom of public footpath, in Rawtenstall, after a "long-standing" problem with people driving down the path and dumping rubbish.

Council bosses hope the security bollards will deter would-be fly-tippers and improve the area for walkers and cyclists.

David Goode, from the environment directorate, said that the traffic barriers would be employed because the current way of dealing with the problem was increasing the risk of those using the footpath lawfully.

This is because council patrol cars had been used to catch fly-tippers. The combination of rubbish dumpers and the security patrol both driving at high speeds increases the risk of collision.

Mr Goode said in a report: "To reduce the risk of any potential accident between a member of the public and a car driving unlawfully on the foot-path an appropriate solution would be to install a barrier under Section 66(3) of the Highways Act 1980."
