Members of an allotment have hailed the installation of security fencing and metal gates to keep problem vandals out – but stressed they need more cash to complete the work.
According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the first part of the security fencing work at Brierfield allotment was completed and unveiled at the weekend.
The past few months have seen a number of break-ins at the site, during which property has been damaged or stolen. As several animals like chicken and geese are also housed at the allotment, holders have expressed concern for their safety.
David Baillie, of the allotment committee, told the newspaper: "We realise a lot of it is from the local kids just messing about but it’s just a nuisance we could do without really.
"Our allotment holders put a lot of time and effort into their plots and it’s a shame to have things spoilt."
The money for the new high security fencing and metal gates was raised through a combination of various grants.
However, the Brierfield Allotment Association is now trying to raise more cash to complete the work around the entire site.
Earlier this month councillors in Colchester called for security fencing to be heightened at a playground to stop people breaking in.
