Police in Surrey are urging residents to be on high alert for their home security after a spate of metal gates thefts in the area.

According to the BBC, the police force said wrought iron metal gates worth around £1,000 had been stolen from three homes in the Bramley area of Waverley.

The authority told residents to increase security by fitting padlocks and anti-lift hinges to their metal gates and to consider getting them security marked.

If locals owned metal gates that were particularly striking, the force said they should photograph them to better aid recovery in case of theft.

Earlier this year the value of installing metal gates to protect gardens was underscored after a survey indicated that people spend more on their gardens that any other part of the house.

Confused.com found that the average garden held items worth £825, with lawnmowers and strimmers amongst the most expensive.
