Southend council to tackle parking on kerbs
Southend council is planning to fine motorists that park on the kerb after a scheme of security bollards proved problematic.

Councillors in the seaside town approved a radical new plan which aims to clamp down on this persistent problem. The authority will penalise any driver that parks one or two wheels on the kerb regardless of whether or not it is a double yellow line.

Southend's authority claims the practice damages the pavements and costs it thousands of pounds a year in repairs. At the moment, drivers who park on kerb can only be fined if there are single or double yellow lines in the road.

Tony Cox, the Conservative councillor responsible for transport, told Echo News: "This seems eminently sensible to me. Pavement parking is a problem in many streets, and causes an obstruction to people trying to get past."

Elsewhere, residents and business owners in Rhyl have reacted angrily to council plans to install more bollards on Trellewelyn Road.
