Rail level crossing legislation is set for a significant review, it has been reported.

According to the Press and Journal, the Law Commissions of Scotland, England and Wales will look at ways of improving rail laws in light of people being killed and injured at level crossings.

The review has been applauded in the north of Scotland, where many open crossings are sited.

Dave Thompson, member of the Scottish parliament for Highlands and Islands, undertook his own survey of residents' thoughts and found that 86 per cent felt there should be barriers fitted to level crossings, the news source said.

Mr Thompson told the news provider: "Anything which will save lives at level crossings is welcome and very necessary.

"Part of that modernisation includes a very sensible proposal in the consultation to transfer the function of closing level crossings to Scottish ministers."

This month residents from a street in Wigan called for the installation of traffic bollards after dubbing the road "Brands Hatch".
