A port centre in Lagos, Nigeria is benefiting from a newly-installed gate entry and exit system.
Construction work currently ongoing at APM Terminals Apapa Limited includes the introduction of traffic barriers and a fully automated gate system, according to the Vanguard.
Some eight lanes now lead into the port terminal, with nine leading out, taking the total to 17 traffic lanes.
Mr Martin Dirks, managing director of APM Terminals, said the new sliding gates were improving traffic flow and easing congestion.
"Already the new gate structure is operational; providing relief and easing off truck traffic at the terminal. The massive construction going on at our terminal will increase capacity and enhance efficiency ten times over. It will optimise traffic flow which will be good for capacity, the environment and for port users too," he told the news provider.
Advanced gate automation and sliding gates systems are proving effective at ports and other commercial centres.
Earlier this month the Port of Tacoma in the US recommended gate systems as ways of reducing waiting times and improving productivity.
