A school and its local community have been urged to work together over a proposal to develop security fencing to protect youngsters.

According to the Midhurst and Petworth Observer, the headteacher of Centre CE Junior School wants to erect school fencing around the Orchard Gardens playing fields.

The fields are well-used by the community but during the last couple of years anti-social behaviour has increased significantly, with reports of litter and dog fouling so serious it was felt a remedy was urgently needed.

The headteacher, Andrew Goff, even told the newspaper that Ofsted had noted the problems.

"I have been at Central School for four years. Almost from the start I have been concerned about health and safety aspects on the field because it's so open.

"The problems identified have intensified over the past couple of years. Ofsted did mention it," he said.

To deal with the problems he wants to install 6 foot high security fencing because "our number one concern has to be for the children in my care".

However, some residents disagree with the plans, feeling it is going over the top. But senior figures from the town have urged all sides to come together to find a solution.
