Visitors to a zoo in Florida got more than they bargained for when a beautiful 500 pound golden tiger leapt out of its enclosure.

The tiger, named Mahesh, vaulted its security fencing at Jungle Island, Miami, after being taunted by a fun-loving primate that had escaped from its cage while being carried past by keepers.

The funky gibbon had been exciting the creature after animatedly jumping around nearby merchandise stalls. Mahesh leapt into the air to catch the animal and landed outside its enclosure.

It fell amongst a large crowd of visitors, many of whom panicked and fled to a barn nearby for safety.

Visitor Larry Rhodes said: "People were running for their lives."

However, it was reported that no one was harmed during the exotic big cat's mad half-hour. It was placated and drawn back into its enclosure by an old favourite – raw meat.

In other animal-related security fencing events, last month an Australian man scaled high security fencing in order to ride a crocodile. The brave man who, incidentally, was inebriated, escaped with relatively minor injuries.
