High security fencing 'could have stopped scrapyard fire'

High security fencing could have helped to prevent a scrapyard fire in Rochdale, according to the owners.

The blaze on Corporation Road, Sparth destroyed more than 75 cars and has left Mazda and Mitsubishi Spare Ltd with a bill of more than £100,000, the Rochdale Observer reports.

Arshad Mahmood, who owns the site, said local authorities have continually denied requests to raise the high security fencing around to scrapyard to 12ft, which may have stopped vandals from targeting it.

"Now we have to get the destroyed cars moved off the site in case of pollution, which we have to pay for and buy in new stock - which will cost between £100,000 and £200,000," he told the newspaper.

"If the council don't let us put the fence up then we'll be put out of business."

It follows reports in Bradford's Telegraph & Argus that a horticulturalist is calling for security fencing at his allotment to be replaced to keep vandals away. ADNFCR-3337-ID-19764917-ADNFCR
