High security fencing makes up a major part of plans for the UK's largest pig farm, which developers hope can be sited in South Derbyshire.

A number of objections to the development have been lodged with South Derbyshire District Council, reports the Burton Mail.

If it gets the go-ahead, the development, proposed by Midland Pig Producers, will house around 2,500 sows on land adjacent to Foston Prison.

The factory will come complete with four agricultural workers' homes, methane gas storage facilities, an electricity generation facility and a large amount of high security fencing.

Director of Midland Pig Producers James Leavesley said the factory would be built on agricultural land in the region, the news provider states.

Commenting on the local opposition to the development, the company said: "We were careful to take the views of local people into account during the development of our plans and, as a result, made several significant changes."
