The use of high security fencing to protect community meetings has been highlighted.
New security fencing worth £5,000 will be erected at a walkway in Madeley that cuts through an area held for meetings, reports Wigan Today.
The security fencing, organised by the Safer Stronger Communities Partnership and Madeley Parish Council, will be installed after elderly residents in the area had expressed safety concerns.
Excessive traffic volumes, anti-social behaviour and damage caused to vehicles had all been reported at the path, which goes through Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings.
The area had previously been fenced off but the repeated vandalism had continued.
After consultation between the local police force and the parish council it was decided to install sturdy steel perimeter fencing.
Miles Hosken, cabinet member for community protection and cohesion, said: "This scheme has allowed the joint ASB Unit to assess concerns raised, consult with local residents and through local partnership funding, install fencing that will offer reassurance and promote confidence within the local community."
Security fencing in public spaces can help to combat problems like anti-social behaviour. This month a sports field in Witham benefitted from security fencing after being dogged by nuisance behaviour.
