A protest by anti-airport expansion group Plane Stupid, which saw a number of people chain themselves to high security fencing at Aberdeen airport, prevented an emergency helicopter being scrambled because the airport was forced to close, a court has heard.

Contesting the account, George Gebbie, one of the defence advocates told Aberdeen Sheriff Court: "What prevented it?

"It is a matter of established fact that the cage with these protesters in it did not prevent the flight taking off."

Nine protestors have gone on trial for shutting down the busy airport - which services oil platforms and drilling rigs in the North Sea - on March 3rd 2009.

As well as chaining themselves to high security fencing, some members of the group have been charged with climbing on the roof of the terminal building and displaying a banner which read 'Nae Trump Games with Climate Change'.

All the defendants deny cutting through the airport's security fencing.
