Mount Vernon Outland Airport has secured some $1.2 million (£799,000) in funding for new perimeter security fencing, it has been stated.

Mount Vernon Register News reports that the Illinois Department of Transportation has released a federal grant of $2.61 million (£1.7 million) for airport fencing projects at both Mount Vernon and nearby Decatur airport.

New air carrier certification rules mean that the amount of perimeter fencing at airports must be increased.

Chris Collins, manger of the airport, said carrier certification was of primary importance in terms of safety.

He claimed: "We maintain the air carrier certification at the airport.

"What that does for the airport is show our tenants and future tenants and customers we are a safe and secure sight. That's one thing that sets us apart from other airports."

Now that the carrier mandate has changed, the airport will now erect ten foot high security fencing, replacing the six foot fence installed in 1992.

Earlier this year, Manchester Airport in the UK began trialing security gates, an access control measure intended to enable the airport to stop searching passengers by hand.
