A man who broke into a property and fled the scene after police arrived crashed into steel fencing whilst trying to make his escape, it has been reported.

Jason Patrick Harris broke into Millville Glass Centre in Millville, New Jersey, US, and stole various items, the Daily Journal has said.

Fleeing in a van he stole from the property, Mr Harris crashed through high security fencing whilst trying to make his escape.

A short time later he crashed into a vehicle at Harrison Avenue in the city, the news provider said. Mr Harris then tried to escape on foot, but was stopped by a member of the public who detained him until police arrived at the scene.

Injured in the crash, the man was taken by Millville Rescue Squad to South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Centre.

According to a police report, he was angry and agitated in the treatment room, kicking and spitting at staff and police officers, the news source said.

Mr Harris was charged with criminal mischief, burglary, trespassing, theft, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension, contempt, driving while intoxicated and assault on law enforcement. He was placed in Cumberland County Jail where bail was set at $20,000 (£13,000).
