A school in Cwmbran has defended the building of school fencing in the face of some criticism from residents.

According to the South Wales Argus, the head teacher and chair of governors at Croesyceiliog School said the high security fencing is being installed to help protect children.

Some 250 locals are backing a petition to get rid of the fence, saying it will stop them using the school fields to walk their dogs and play sports.

However, Sarah Logan, head of Croesyceiliog, chair of governors Colin Crick, pointed out that the fields are owned by the schools and that residents using the fields for their own use are in fact disrupting lessons.

On completion of the security fencing the fields will only be open to pupils.

This month a Wigan school celebrated after a long campaign to build high security fencing paid off.
