South Yorkshire Police are warning people to ensure their homes are secure this summer.
They suggest that as the weather gets warmer people will be leaving items such as garden furniture, play equipment and barbecues in their garden, which could attract the attention of thieves.
However, there are some simple measures, such as fitting security fencing, which can help deter would-be burglars.
The police force advised people to lock valuable items away in a shed or garage overnight and fit exterior lights and sensors in the garden.
Detective chief inspector Craig Robinson said: "By taking some of these simple steps this will help to reduce the chances of you being a victim of burglary.
"Remember, if you are going away on holiday don't leave your curtains closed during the daytime, ask a neighbour to look after your home and use timer switches to turn on some lights when it gets dark."
Last week, research by Marks & Spencer Home Insurance highlighted that the average garden shed contains £888 worth of valuables.
