A Welsh castle has been cordoned off with high security fencing after major structural damage was discovered.

The Bishop's Castle, in Llandaff, Cardiff, was inspected by the local council after it was reported that a crack had been found in one of the castle's towers.

Llandaff councillor Gareth Aubrey was concerned that residents were not informed that the high security fencing was to be erected.

However, a council spokesman told the South Wales Echo: "A recent site inspection found a large crack in the masonry of a tower at Bishop's Castle on the boundary of the Cathedral School.

"As a precaution, temporary fencing was erected for safety purposes. Advice is being sought from Cadw's specialist in order to ascertain the necessary repairs to make the masonry safe.

The castle was built between 1265 and 1287 but has fallen into disrepair and very little remains of the building.

According to the Llandaff Society, the site has been "completely neglected", reports the news provider.ADNFCR-3337-ID-19880505-ADNFCR
