Scarborough Borough Council has installed £40,000 worth of high security fencing ahead of this year's Seamer Horse Fair.

The fencing has been erected around Centurion Way in Crossgates in a bid to prevent festival-goers from staying at the site.

Last year, travellers stayed in the area despite an alternative camping area being set aside for them, and trouble broke out.

Speaking to the Scarborough Evening News, Andy Skelton, the council's head of environmental services, said that on the first day of festivities "very few problems had arisen".

He added: "We are pleased most of the travellers agree the site is satisfactory."

Meanwhile, superintendent Javid Ali, eastern area safer neighbourhood commander, said: "The movement on site today has gone without incident and has met with a positive response. We will continue to monitor the event."

The Seamer Horse Fair is a ten-day event and will be monitored by security personnel 24-hours a day.ADNFCR-3337-ID-19876031-ADNFCR
