Carlisle City Council is set to erect high security fencing to protect a newly-discovered rare flower.

Discovered at Talkin Tarn country park near Brampton, the white-flowered narrow-leafed helleborine orchid is an extremely rare specimen in the wild and the council has sought the opinion of both local and national experts in how to protect the flower, the News & Star reports.

The number of helleborine orchids in the UK has dropped dramatically over the past 30 years.

According to the council, the security fencing will protect the orchids from trampling and help to preserve fungi that grow in the area - some of which the plants rely on to survive.

"We take our responsibilities to protect the wildlife within the tarn's grounds very seriously and the measures proposed aim to prevent this beautiful plant from becoming extinct," the council's Ray Bloxham told the news provider.

He added that after consulting with Plantlife, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Natural England, the decision to erect high security fencing was made.
