Restoration of heritage metal railings around Cheltenham Racecourse is close to completion.

The restoration project has been funded by Cheltenham Council's Community Pride initiative and will see security fencing and gates surrounding the ex-Great Western Railway Station improved.

Some of the metal railings were removed in the 1970s, allegedly to allow the Queen's car to access platform one during an official visit to Tewkesbury.

As well as the sections of security fencing that needed replacing, other metal railings needed realigning.

Colonel Robert Stark, chairman and project leader of the Friends of Cheltenham Racecourse Station, said: "The Community Pride grants have greatly assisted the funding of the volunteer projects at the racecourse station enhancing its visitor appeal and returning it to its Great Western Railway heritage."

Meanwhile, councillor Steve Jordan said: "Thanks must go to the volunteers for all the hard work they've put in to making these improvements."

Recently, a church in Aberfoyle announced it was spending a proportion of the £10,000 Lottery funding it received on new metal railings.ADNFCR-3337-ID-19853798-ADNFCR
