Ocean Springs has begun trialing new oil absorbent temporary fencing solutions in the wake of the ongoing Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico oil platform disaster.

Financed by a BP grant to the Department of Marine Resources, the five-foot tall security bollards have been installed at the end of Ocean Springs' Washington Avenue.

Some 500 feet of fencing is set to be erected to protect the region's coast against drifting oil pollution.

The temporary fencing solution has the ability to absorb around 750 gallons of oil.

Speaking to the Sun Herald, mayor Connie Moran said: "I feel as for a small town we're as best prepared as we can be."

She added that if the trial proves successful, temporary fencing solutions will be deployed at other points on Ocean Springs' Gulf coast.

The US government is currently pressing ahead with plans to bring criminal charges against BP following the oil rig explosion.ADNFCR-3337-ID-19818733-ADNFCR
