A campaign has been launched to save parking bollards in York's main car park after the council announced it would be looking to expand a university.
The City of York Council is planning to allow York St John University to expand on the site in Union Terrace, creating around 100 new jobs in the process.
However, councillor Ian Gillies, who says the plan should be abandoned, has written to council leader James Alexander saying that there is "no alternative provision" in place, reports York Press.
He told the news provider that the measures should be stopped immediately.
"Coun Alexander is presumptuous to be selling off a major city asset without first having had a dialogue with the people of York on the impact such a sale would have on residents, visitors and shopkeepers," he explained.
"I don't think we should let Labour rush to sell a substantial piece of city-centre property in York so its new cabinet can finance its own schemes."
Elsewhere, Tesco will install parking barriers over the coming years as it opens a new store in Whitehaven.
