The recently-launched online crime maps, which may be of interest to firms that use security fencing
to protect their properties, are a valuable tool, particularly for new businesses looking to move, the British Security Industry Association has said.
For the first time, people can now see what crime and antisocial behaviour has occurred on their streets at http://www.police.uk/
The interactive maps allow people to enter their postcode and see what types of crimes have been committed locally, including burglary.
It is all part of the government's transparency agenda – an attempt to give communities the tools to engage with the police in a more positive way.
According to Pauline Norstrom, chair of the CCTV section at the BSIA, while most businesses will already know about the types of crime in their area, the maps will prove especially useful for new firms looking to transfer to a specific location.
"It could therefore be valuable in helping inform business owners about the type of crime they could be facing, therefore assisting them when shaping their security strategy," she said.
