Children and families gathered in the town of Matlock earlier this week to celebrate the unveiling of new play area fencing and equipment.

The playground, situated in Gorsey Bank, was unveiled following a £36,000 investment, having previously been under threat.

Matlockmercury.co.uk reports that government spending cuts had meant the funding was withdrawn, but Derbyshire County Council said in January said the money had been received.

Chairman of the council's community and environment committee, Janet Goodison, told the news provider that there were plans in place regardless of whether the money was sent.

"Happily the original funding package was reinstated and the great thing about this facility is that it's the young people who have told us what they wanted to see here," he explained.

Elsewhere, it was recently announced that Allerdale council could replace equipment at nine sites if interest is shown in them. If it goes ahead, community groups will thereafter be in charge of maintaining them.
