Traffic barriers caused chaos around a hospital on the Wirral leaving the motorists gridlocked on the forecourt for hours.
The problems at Arrowe Park Hospital were hampered by essential roadworks being undertaken by National Grid Gas which closed one of the two exit routes to the building.
Ambulances and other emergency services vehicles struggled to get patients to A&E as cars shunted around to get off the hospital car park. The height of the congestion came at 5pm (January 11th) when staff who had finished their day's work and afternoon visitors simultaneously attempted to leave the two main car parks in the hospital grounds.
Gary Doherty, Arrowe Park Hospital's acting chief executive, told the Wirral Globe: "I am very sorry that this happened and would like to assure our staff, patients and visitors that plans are being developed as a matter of urgency."
It comes after a similar incident happened in Swindon where the Great Western Hospital refused to blame traffic barriers installed in its car park for causing mass traffic disruption around the building.
