Motorists who drive into pedestrian-only zones in a Nottingham town are set to be restricted from doing so by the introduction of security bollards.
According to the Hucknall Dispatch, drivers have been abusing the zones in several streets in Bulwell for some time.
Under plans drawn up by Nottingham City Council, automated bollards have been proposed to stop drivers between the hours of 10:00 and 16:00.
The newspaper reported that one committee member even yelled out "Hallelujah" when the idea was announced at a council meeting.
A council-commissioned survey on the bollards found that 72 per cent of people were in favour of the proposal, with 33 per cent feeling a review of existing road signs was necessary.
John Lee, the council's rights-of-way officer, told the newspaper that the current restrictions could not be legally enforced, with only a reliance on drivers' own goodwill to see the rules observed.
Recently, security bollards were installed by a road in Middlewich to stop motorists mounting grass verges.
