Motorists travelling along Chislehurst Road in London are finding themselves confronted with traffic barriers as work is carried out in the area.

Chislehurst Road bridge will be closed for the next 12 months as structural work takes place, amid fears that the existing structure could collapse at any time.

Portfolio holder for environment councillor Colin Smith explained: "An identical bridge to this one collapsed without warning several years ago and engineering studies show that this bridge is no longer structurally sound."

Motorists had been told that disruption caused by the traffic barriers would be kept to a minimum, but it seems that many are disgruntled by the work.

Mr Smith urged drivers to avoid the area where necessary and not to blindly follow their satnav, but rather to read the road signs that have been put up for their safety.

Some drivers had complained that the diversion has not been marked clearly enough.
