The UK is split over whether airport security checks go too far, a survey has revealed.

TripAdvisor's poll of 1,302 of its users over the last five days reveals that half agreed with the recent claim made by British Airways' (BA) chairman that airport security checks, such as shoe and laptop checks, have gone too far.

A little over half (51 per cent) agree with Martin Broughton's comments that checks have gone too far and are now "redundant".

Just under half (49%) said they were comfortable with current measures.

The poll comes after a suspect package was found on a courier aircraft at East Midlands airport.

"Airport security is always a sensitive topic, and even more so following the recent discovery of the explosive devices at East Midlands airport a few days ago," Emma O’Boyle, spokesperson for TripAdvisor, said.

"While many British travellers agree with BA’s comments about unnecessary checks, an almost equal number, quite likely in light of this recent scare, maintain that airports are right to be extra cautious," she added.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800211586-ADNFCR
