Concrete security bollards have been named by Professional Jeweller as the top device to prevent shops from being ram-raided.
The barriers beat off stiff competition from reinforced glass, CCTV cameras and elaborate fog systems to scoop the top honour. Professional Jeweller described the impressive features of a reinforced bollard as a sure-fire way to "protect the store against would-be robbers".
Bollards have become unsung heroes in shop protection but the jewellery-focused website has finally given them the recognition they richly deserve. Steel-enforced concrete blockades have been highlighted as the key weapon in the fight against shop crime and more stores will no doubt look into bollard protection in the near future as a result.
It is not the first time bollards have been praised for their crime-fighting abilities, earlier in the month the Daily Gazette reported that a Colchester councillor had called for more of the barriers to be installed after an HGV driver became stuck in a narrow street in the town's Dutch quarter.
