An important  traffic barrier in Burton, Derbyshire, could be removed following a number of complaints.

The gate, which prevents motorists from using a rural path, is installed across a public walkway linking Gravel Pit Hill Road and Ticknall Road and could be taken down after Derbyshire County Council received complaints.

However, councillor Peter Smith, of Hartshorne Parish authority, fears that if the barrier is removed it will lead to the tranquillity of the area being ruined by crime, yobs and heavy traffic.

Mr Smith told the Burton Mail: "We have got to think about the bigger picture. People are often now going up there walking as they know what a pleasure they can get out of it. We should do something as it is a beautiful area and this will ruin it."

Derbyshire is host to a number of national parks and councillors believe that if barriers like this are removed it could lead to the area being spoiled from its normally peaceful and picturesque surroundings.
