Fury over disruption to main Cardiff street

Fury over disruption to main Cardiff street
A decision to carry out roadworks on one of Cardiff's busiest streets has been met with anger from market traders.

The city's council took the decision to close Westgate Street for major refurbishment, including road resurfacing and the installation of electric security bollards, ahead of the Olympic football matches set to be held at the Millennium Stadium.

However, traders in Cardiff's indoor market have revealed that takings have been down 40 per cent since the work got underway on Monday (April 16th).

The busy city centre road has been partially closed, diverting drivers and bus services away from the main shopping area.

Alan Griffiths, chairman of Cardiff Market Traders' Association, said: "It's not fair that all of us have to suffer for a couple of football games in the Olympics. We’re just trying to make a living but it’s very difficult at the moment."

Work is due to be complete on the Westgate Street by April 30th.
