Acoustic fencing could need replacing in Paignton after a car and two trucks ploughed into barriers in south Devon.

Coming in at 40 tonnes between them, the two vehicles are thought to have skidded 20 metres on loose grit that had been deposited on the ground following resurfacing work in the area.

Thisissouthdeveon.co.uk reports that the incident led to nearly 70 pupils from local grammar schools being late for lessons.

A police spokesman told the news provider that the crash barrier was essential to preventing a more serious accident from taking place.

"The recovery lorry and its load locked up and rolled on the grit about 20 metres down the road with the Nissan spinning around after the collision," he explained.

"It was very lucky the crash barrier was there to stop the vehicles going down the bank of the carriageway."

Paignton is situated near Torquay and forms a part of the English Riviera.
