Balfour Beatty to utilise BIM in £200m housing plan

Balfour Beatty to utilise BIM in £200m housing plan
Balfour Beatty is set to use building information modelling (BIM) on a 1,000-home building project in Sheerwater, Woking.

The company will utilise the technology on the £200 million housing development as well as a new tower structure in London. The work in Woking was originally secured by Balfour's regional business Mansell which also includes a 30-year deal to maintain the properties once the initial construction phase is completed. Building.co.uk reports that it forms part of a joint venture with partner Pinnacle PSG entitled New Vision Homes.

It marks a significant milestone for Balfour as it is the first housing project where it has used BIM. The company has been steadily increasing its adoption of the technology in recent years and it is now used on 80 projects and several bids the firm is involved with.

Peter Trebilock, design director at Balfour, told the news provider that the firm has also been encouraging its supply chain businesses to adopt BIM within the next 12 months or run the risk of losing work.

BIM has become an increasingly prominent term within the construction sector as many companies are looking to introduce it to their operations. It allows contractors to map out how they are going to bring a building development to fruition through the use of 3D modelling. This can highlight any potential problems that could occur during the construction and is integral to keeping to budgets and timeframes.

The technology can also reduce the risk around a building site. Crowd behaviour and fire modelling capability allow designs to be optimised by public safety which ensures that there are no major stumbling blocks when it comes to laying the first brick.

Mr Trebilock told Building.co.uk that Balfour's use of BIM on the Woking project is aimed at making savings through off-site manufacture, logisitic planning and more efficient management of the properties once complete. He added that by phasing the work it would help the company to effectively finish the project on time and within budget.
