Plans for a major redevelopment of the BBC Television Centre in London have been given the green light.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council approved a proposed mixed use overhaul of the Grade II-listed, 1950s building on Wood LaneShepherd’s Bush.

The scheme at the 14-acre site, backed by developer Stanhope, will include office and studio space for the BBC, entertainment and leisure facilities, public open space, offices, a boutique hotel and up to 1,000 homes.

For the first time, Television Centre will also be opened up to the public with the forecourt remodelled with shops, leisure and entertainment facilities. There will be pedestrian access through the site that links to the local area, including Hammersmith Park.

In 2010 the BBC announced that it would cease broadcasting from the centre in 2013 and move its core departments to Broadcasting House close to Oxford Circus.

Stanhope purchased the site for £200 million in July 2012

Under the plans, the BBC will keep three studios at Television Centre with the remaining space aimed at firms in the creative sector. Alongside plans for 1,000 new homes, there will be a cinema, gym, restaurants and cafes.

Dominic Coles, director of operations at the BBC, said: “The sale of Television Centre was a key part of the transformation of the BBC’s property portfolio which continues to save millions of pounds for licence fee payers every year.

“The decision is an important step in the regeneration of this iconic building and the BBC will continue working with Stanhope as the project develops.”

The scheme is due to go into construction phase in 2015.

Officially opened on June 29 1960, Television Centre was the BBC’s first purpose-built centre for television production, housing eight studios, production galleries, dressing rooms, camera workshops, recording areas and offices.

It was designed by architect Graham Dawbarn, who, upon being given the brief for the project, went to a local pub where he sketched the initial design for the building on the back of an old envelope.
