United House has been awarded a contract worth £56.7 million for the construction of a new development on Wharf Road in Islington, north London.
The company is aiming to create a new mixed-use site in the area and will help it come to fruition through the use of BIM (building information modelling). The process is a 3D digital construction technique which allows firms to create a version of what the structure will look like when it is completed and helps contractors assess the potential problems they may encounter in the building process.
BIM gives a virtual construction of the proposed structure before any actual work starts and is used predominantly to reduce uncertainty, improve safety and resolve any issues that may arise during the physical phase. Companies can use the information provided by BIM to give a clear indication of how the structure should be correctly built. It allows decision makers behind the project to be able to make key judgements reliably and ahead of time meaning that it can boost productivity on site.
United House is set to work alongside A2Dominion Housing Group which has been given the task of delivering the Wharf Road development. It will include 327 canal-side homes which will be available for private sale, shared ownership or social renting. They will be built in four blocks of seven to ten storey structures complete with rooftop play areas and terraces. Officials noted that there will be 6,000 sq ft of commercial space which companies can bid for once the development is completed.

Construction is due to get underway in February 2013 with officials stating that a completion date has been earmarked for autumn 2015.
