Work on the expansion of a Nestlé coffee factory in Tutbury, Derbyshire, has gotten underway.
John Sisk and Sons has sub-contracted the development to O'Brien Contractors which has already started on laying the foundations for the £200 million upgrade of the Nescafé facility.
It marks the highest value project that O'Brien has received in its history and is also Nestlé UK's largest expansion across the globe, bringing together all the aspects of coffee production. The Tutbury facility will be home to freeze drying, spray drying and pod technology and gives it a firm footing within the UK's food sector.
Foundation work is already underway, but it is just one part of the O'Brien contract, as it is also expected to deliver a host of other aspects. The company is responsible for the completion of substructures, drainage, storm water, management systems, formation of access roads, ground remediation, landscaping and storm drainage among others.
Peter O'Brien, managing director at O'Brien Contractors, said: "This multi-million pound contract is a fantastic start to 2013 for O'Brien Contractors and we are delighted to have developed a collaborative relationship with Sisk and look forward to working with them to deliver a successful project for Nestlé."
Nestlé already has a strong foothole within the UK, with its product technology centre (PTC) being situated in York, and forms part of the Swiss company's global network of research centres.
The site in north Yorkshire is the business' centre of excellence for its chocolate, sugar confectionery and biscuits sectors and currently employs around 150 to 200 members of staff.
While the Nestlé's sweets side is already well represented in the UK, the expansion of its coffee brand will once again strengthen its position within the hot drinks market.
The Nescafé brand has been a household name since it was first launched in 1938 and offers a host of different styles of coffee to suit all tastes including the classic Nescafé Gold Blend as well as intense flavours such as the Alta Rica.
