It was home to some memorable matches but now the London 2012 Olympic Basketball Arena has been put up for sale by Barr Construction.
The facility played host to the men's and women's group matches during the summer showpiece event in the English capital but now companies can bid just £2.5 million to purchase the site. It is currently situated at the Olympic Park in Stratford but is in the process of being dismantled to be used elsewhere. The arena represents the largest single temporary structure ever created for the Olympic Games and was the third biggest facility in the London event.
It was used for the early rounds of the men's basketball as well as the women's event up until the quarter finals when the final stages were played at the O2 Arena, named North Greenwich Arena for the Games. The facility also played host to wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby during the 2012 Paralympic Games which were held a month after the Olympics.
Barr Construction has now put the structure up for sale and has appointed commercial property consultancy BTWShiells and accountants Ernst & Young to handle the transaction of the sale.
The Basketball Arena measures 114m long, 96m wide and 35m high occupying a footprint of 11,000 sq m. Barr has put the building shell up for sale which consists of a 1,000 tonne skeletal steel frame and a 23,000 sq m recyclable white PVC fabric skin. However, the 12,000 seats that were housed in the facility will be sold separately to temporary seating provider GL events Slick Seating.
Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: "The Olympic Delivery Authority and LOCOG [London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games] learned the lessons of previous Games and created the most sustainable, cost effective event in recent history.
"The Basketball Arena was one of the showpiece structures of the Games, but it was clear there would be no legacy use for a permanent basketball venue, hence the decision to create this temporary building."
