A new Hilton hotel is set to be built next to Leeds Arena after GB Group secured funding for the project.
The company has generated £32 million for the development which will provide high quality accommodation for concert goers attending the new arena. The Hilton will be situated in the heart of Leeds city centre, next to Leeds Metropolitan University's Rose Bowl conferencing facility. Work is expected to begin on the 206-bedroom, 14-storey hotel this month and will also include a destination rooftop bar.
Leeds Arena, renamed First Direct Arena under corporate sponsorship, has finally allowed the city to compete with the likes of Manchester and Sheffield when it comes to attracting big name concerts and sporting events to the city. Since its opening in July 2013, the venue has hosted the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Sir Elton John, Stereophonics and Rod Stewart as well as sporting events such as WWE Live and will soon play host to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The new hotel will sit just 300m away from the arena and is sure to be a major hit for people spending the weekend in the city. GB Building secured the funding thanks to working alongside Leeds and Partners and through the local enterprise partnership. This added to the private funding to ensure the scheme got the go-ahead.
Brandon Riley, director of hotels at GB Group, said: "This project is a great example of how the public and private sector can work together in partnership to achieve a common goal. We are delighted to be in a position to move forward with our plans for this exciting new investment."
The hotel development is also good news for employment opportunities with 100 long-term jobs set to be created when the latest Hilton outlet opens in 2016 while additional temporary jobs, primarily in the construction sector, will be created.
