Plans unveiled for Google UK HQ in London

Plans unveiled for Google UK HQ in London
Plans for Google's new headquarters in London have been unveiled, estimated to cost around £650 million to complete.

The facility, due to be created in King's Cross, will span one million sq ft housing Google's UK operations and marks the search giant's relocation from offices in Victoria and Holborn. BAM Construct has secured the main construction contract worth around £300 million after fending off competition from the likes of Skanska and Carillion. Allford Hall Monaghan Morris has selected as the main architect and plans have now been submitted to Camden Council.

If approved, work can get underway in the opening months of 2014 with a completion date earmarked for late 2016. Designers behind the project explained that the building represents the industrial history of the area around King's Cross. It will feature steel columns, pre-cast concrete panels and low-iron glass and is expected to around 35,000 people working on the site once the regeneration of King's Cross is complete.

As with the national and international train stations nearby, the designers are paying homage to these iconic structures through painted steelwork which has been inspired by the metalwork on display at St Pancras. It is also set to be in keeping with overall regeneration project that has been going on at King's Cross to ensure that passengers have a much improved journey experience.

Simon Allford, director of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, said: "The architectural approach, which has taken inspiration from King's Cross and St Pancras International railway stations, complements the local area's strong industrial heritage and will be a building London can be proud of."

Google is set to feature in the upcoming movie The Internship where Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn apply for the company's internship programme. The film shows the unorthodox office in space California featuring bold colours and quirky furniture that has become synonymous with the firm and was also replicated in the internet giant's Victoria and Holborn premises. It is due to be released in the UK on July 3rd.
