Woking town centre revamp plans open for consultation

Woking town centre revamp plans open for consultation
Proposals underlying an ambitious redevelopment of Woking town centre have been unveiled.

Devised by Moyallen (owners of Peacocks Shopping Centre), Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council, the plan underscores an ambitious agenda to bring the centre into the 21st century.

A substantial programme of development has been outlined, which will encompass 125,000 square feet of land. Victoria Square, as it will be known, is to be delivered by Bandstand Square Developments Limited.

Some of the proposed inclusions in the revamped town centre will be a huge Marks & Spencer – considered the "anchor" of the new space – a new Boots store, a four star hotel, new residential properties and two new public plazas.

"These exciting redevelopment proposals to create Victoria Square will positively transform this part of Woking town centre and deliver a high quality mixed use development," said councillor John Kingsbury, leader of Woking Borough Council.

"It will include a number of improvements that will benefit local people as well as attracting important investment into the town."

Councillor David Hodge, leader of Surrey County Council, added that the plans for Victoria Square form part of a bigger picture. It is included in the council's long-term vision for supporting Surrey's economy, while also boosting services for residents and delivering "local jobs for local people".

Moyallen's Peter Robinson said that the trio are inviting members of the public to take part in consultations on the proposed plans.

"The feedback received will be collated, considered and, where appropriate, incorporated into the final development scheme," he said.

If agreed, the Town Centre's very fabric will change, bringing it into the 21st century. For example, in addition to the construction of new buildings, roads and pathways will be transformed. It will ensure that pedestrians and motorists are able to navigate through the city in the safest, most effective and economical way achievable.
