Property group Lend Lease has been awarded a £89 million contract for a new development set to be built in Glasgow city centre.

The company beat off competition from the likes of Bam, Morgan Siddall and Sir John McAlpine to land the deal which will see the University of Strathclyde have a new Technology and Innovation Centre built within the heart of Scotland's second largest city. The facility will be the first of its kind within the UK and will bring together researchers, academics and project managers to help find solutions to the overriding problems that are ongoing within the UK at the moment.

It will have a concerted focus on green energy developments throughout the world and will be the cornerstone of the International Technology and Renewable Energy Zone.

Scotland is looking to become a world leader in the creation and commitment to renewable energy and is already set to become the home of the world's largest offshore wind farm, which will be built off the coast of Caithness. It has also tested innovative wave energy devices to harness the assets the country has in terms of green energy.

Lend Lease has outlined a building timeframe of 87 weeks in which it will construct the nine-storey, triangular structure. It will cover 260,000 sq ft and is situated adjacent to the university's campus. Officials have stated that it will include open plan offices, a specialist laboratory and three lecture theatres.

Michael Dyke, Lend Lease executive director, said: "The Technology and Innovation Centre will be a global centre of research excellence and winning the contract is a great result for Lend Lease.

"We are particularly excited about working with the University of Strathclyde to bring economic, sustainable benefit to the local community through the involvement of small businesses, social enterprise groups and employment of new entrants to construction."

It has also been revealed that the building will be completed with the Energy Performance Certificate 'A' rating standards in mind.
