The University of Bath has announced major new construction plans that will be spread over the course of the next three years.
Officials unveiled the £100 million new build and refurbishment programme that will focus on four different projects, improving the institute in terms of teaching facilities and student accommodation as well as creating a new Centre for the Arts.
There will also be a major refurbishment project at 1 West, which is designed to improve the way teaching is conducted at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Computer Science.
The university has stated that all of these projects will also be set up to increase the environmental performance of the institute, reducing the amount of emissions that are currently released by the buildings within the campus.
Bath's new general teaching accommodation structure will be the first of the developments to be built, providing new facilities for the faculty as well as two 350-seater lecture halls. Officials have said that this will be completed by October 2013, costing £26 million.
Bath's second project will focus on the construction of a brand new student accommodation complex that will add an extra 708 en-suite bedrooms onto the busy campus. Officials have set a finish date of summer 2014 for the project, which carries a value of £43 million and it is hoped it will take the strain off student housing in Bath.
The Centre for the Arts is also due to be completed in 2014 and will provide the wider community with a focal point for which a full programme of cultural events will be able to take place. The centre will have scope for facilities such as a theatre, performance and rehearsal studios, a gallery, an area where tutors can bring classes as well as a café.
Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, university vice chancellor, said: "Our aim is to further enhance the university’s ability to deliver an outstanding student experience; creating additional facilities for research, and an inspiring working environment, as well as providing cultural and economic benefits for the wider Bath region."
