People living and working in rural areas could soon invest in steel gates and other security measures, following a recent conference.

The Rural Crime Seminar, sponsored by NFU Mutual, highlighted some of the problems faced by rural communities and how they can be addressed in the future.

Such areas have witnessed a 17 per cent rise in the cost of theft over recent years, suggesting that firm and decisive action needs to be taken.

One of the ideas put forward was that police and insurers should work more closely with one another to avoid some of the high-worth thefts seen over recent years.

Statistics show that the number of tractor theft claims dealt with by NFU Mutual increased eight per cent in 2010, while the cost of claims rose 21 per cent.

This reflects the growing demand for high-value tractors that are then being sold on by criminals.
