Security gates championed for halving Burnley crime

Security gates championed for halving Burnley crime
Security gates in alleyways across Burnley, Lancashire, have been named as heroes in the fight against crime in the town.

Since the installation of the metal saviours in 2008 anti-social behaviour has been slashed in half, according to a new report by the county council.

Activity known as "acquisitive crime" which includes burglary and car theft fell by 50 per cent overall and 71 per cent in places such as Gannow.

Thefts have decreased by anything between four and 53 per cent in certain areas and councillors are now considering the installation of the gates in places such as Rosegrove and Coal Clough.

In 2010/11 Home Office statistics found that burglary rates in Burnley were at 18.9 per cent, nearly double the national average of 9.6 per cent.

Councillor Neil Mottershead told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Alley gates are popular with residents and the council receives more requests for them than we have funding for."
